THE PRACTICAL SIDE OF ELECTRIC

The right charger.
The whole picture.

Charging time, cost and access belong in the same conversation. Explore the evidence, then check the network you would actually use.

01 / TIME

Ask which part of the battery.

A quoted charging time needs a starting and ending charge level, vehicle, charger and test conditions. A peak power rating is not an average over the whole stop.

02 / COST

Check the bill, not just the rate.

Compare energy units, charging losses, session fees and tariffs. For fleets, include depot equipment, grid connection and demand charges where they apply.

03 / ACCESS

A pin is only the beginning.

Check connector compatibility, opening hours, payment and live status. For trucks, confirm bay size, trailer access, booking and whether the site is public or depot-only.

Range & charging / US

“Cold weather can substantially reduce EV range”

AAA's May 2026 controlled test of three EVs found calculated range fell 39% at -6.7 °C, compared with 23.9 °C, with cabin heating set to 22.2 °C. The penalty is real and model-dependent.

Cost / China

“Electric cars always cost more to buy than ICE cars in China”

IEA's 2026 outlook reports that nearly 70% of BEVs sold in China in 2025 were cheaper than their ICE equivalents, before government incentives. Price claims need a market, segment and date.

Charging costs / Cross-market

“Charging an electric car is always cheaper than buying gasoline”

Charging can save substantial money, especially at home, but public fast-charging prices, local electricity tariffs and vehicle efficiency can reverse the comparison. UK January 2024 examples ranged from 7p to 18p per mile depending on charging access, against a 15p combustion-car benchmark.

False
Maintenance costs / US

“Electric cars always cost more to maintain than combustion cars”

AAA's 2024 US new-car comparison found its electric category had the lowest maintenance, repair and tire costs. That does not mean every EV repair is cheap, or that lower servicing costs guarantee lower total ownership costs.

Misleading
Public charging / US

“Electric cars cannot make practical long-distance road trips”

US public charging data document a working and expanding network, alongside genuine reliability problems. J.D. Power's 2025 survey reported unsuccessful charging visits among 14% of owners, down from 19% in 2024; these percentages are owner reports, not nationwide failure rates per charging session.

“Tesla’s 500-mile Semi range is a test-condition estimate; Pepsi’s monitored truck covered 410 miles on one charge”

Tesla now lists 325- and 500-mile Semi versions, but labels those distances estimates tied to specified road and load conditions. NACFE's 2023 monitoring recorded a PepsiCo Semi covering 659.8 km on one charge and 1,731.7 km in one day with charging stops; its 2025 run later tracked two Saia Semis in regional, urban, and two-shift freight work. NACFE's newer long-haul results include an 875-mile day for its BEV cohort on favorable terrain, not a Tesla-specific range result.

Truck cost and charging infrastructure / US

“The Semi has a reported $290,000 customer quote, while its Megacharger network is still expanding”

Tesla does not publish a public Semi list price. A reported customer quote puts the Long Range truck at $290,000 before destination charges and taxes, while California program paperwork shows different approximate trim values. Tesla's 1.2 MW and 30-minute charging figures are product claims, and its route map and partner plans distinguish intended coverage from stations already operating.

Fleet costs and total cost of ownership / Europe

“European battery-electric heavy trucks are already cheaper to own than diesel in every market”

T&E's 2026 headline finds electric trucks cheaper in six of nine major EU markets when a Chinese alternative is included; its European-truck-only comparison wins in five, with Belgium nearly at parity. These are modeled results, not measured universal savings from fleet accounts.

Heavy truck costs and charging / China

“Electric heavy trucks in China are already cheaper and as practical as diesel in every use case”

High-use Chinese fleets can save on total cost with battery-electric trucks, whether they charge or swap. Yet battery-inclusive purchase prices are high, battery leasing shifts expense into monthly fees, and costs depend on route, utilization, payload, weather, and infrastructure. A port case and a long-haul case show both the savings and the limits.
