Emissions / Europe

“Manufacturing an EV emits more greenhouse gases than an ICE car’s entire lifetime”

The claim confuses a larger manufacturing footprint with a larger total footprint. ICCT’s 2025 EU model includes production and still puts the BEV’s entire lifecycle at 63 g CO₂e/km versus 235 for gasoline. Its extra production emissions are repaid after roughly 17,000 km under the study assumptions.

Fire safety / Europe

“Electric cars catch fire more often than combustion cars”

Denmark’s 2025 records report 1.0 fire per 10,000 electric and hybrid cars, versus 4.0 for other car types. Dispatch counts rose as the combined fleet grew; the rate is fleet-based, not a BEV-only or battery-fire measure.

Battery life / US

“EV batteries normally need replacing after a few years”

The fixed April 2024 DOE release reported 1.5% battery replacements due to failure in an approximately 15,000-vehicle plug-in sample, excluding recalls. That dated snapshot challenges routine early replacement; it is not today’s US-wide lifetime failure rate.

Battery life / Cross-market

“An EV battery loses half its capacity within a few years”

Geotab's January 2026 study found average annual battery degradation of 2.3% across more than 22,700 EVs and 21 makes and models. That contradicts rapid halving as the typical outcome in this sample.

Emissions / Europe

“Battery production cancels the climate benefit of European EVs”

ICCT's 2025 EU analysis includes production, energy supply, maintenance and recycling. Its modeled medium-size BEV emits 63 g CO₂e/km over its lifetime, versus 235 for a gasoline car: approximately 73% less.

Emissions / US

“US electric cars only move emissions to the power plant”

IEA's 2024 model includes electricity and production. For a medium-size US BEV in its 2023 purchase cohort, lifetime greenhouse gas emissions are about 65% lower than an equivalent combustion car.

Emissions / China

“China's coal power makes every EV worse for the climate than an ICE car”

IEA's 2024 lifecycle model estimates about 40% lower emissions for a medium-size BEV in China than its combustion equivalent, despite a more carbon-intensive grid.

Range & charging / US

“Cold weather can substantially reduce EV range”

AAA's May 2026 controlled test of three EVs found calculated range fell 39% at 20°F (−6.7°C), compared with 75°F (23.9°C), with cabin heating set to 72°F. The penalty is real and model-dependent.

Recycling / US

“EV batteries cannot be recycled”

DOE documented US capacity to reclaim 35,500 tons of battery materials in 2023. Recycling exists, although capacity is not the same as the amount of retired EV batteries actually recycled.

fires per 10,000 cars

The agency counts dispatches to fires involving vehicles and reports a fleet-based rate for electric and hybrid cars combined. This is not an isolated traction-battery ignition rate; the rate is not adjusted for vehicle age or mileage, and the exact within-year fleet exposure denominator is not specified in the factsheet.
