“EV batteries never need to be replaced”

Reviewed 2026-10-05 · 2 min read · 4 original sources

What the evidence shows

A Geotab 2024 release used an absolute never-replaced statement while reporting 1.8% average annual degradation. A sample average and a projected long service life do not establish that no individual battery will ever fail or need replacement.

THE VEHICLES BEHIND THE NUMBERS

Older vehicles or current generations?

Geotab's 2024 sample has no model-year or chemistry split; 20 years is a projection, not observed follow-up. Lab cells do not guarantee newer-car longevity.

We separate vehicles from before 2023 and 2023 onward. A report’s publication date does not establish a vehicle’s model year or a battery’s manufacturing date.

“Not reported” means the source does not disclose it. Model year, first registration, vehicle assembly and battery manufacture are different dates. Unmatched studies cannot establish how much newer batteries improved.

MANUFACTURERS IN THIS EVIDENCE

Which brands do these results describe?

Geotab aggregates almost 5,000 vehicles but does not identify makes or models in its public summary. The accompanying lab comparison uses commercial cells, not whole cars. Findings therefore describe a mixed fleet and cells, not brand-level battery life.

All manufacturers are OEMs. These groups describe brand focus, not a quality ranking or country of origin. EV-focused brands can also sell plug-in hybrids. Results apply to the identified models, batteries and conditions.

Why this claim deserves a correction too

Geotab’s 2024 release includes an absolute statement that EV batteries will never require replacement. The surrounding discussion concerns average degradation and an expectation of long useful life. That distinction is the reason for the misleading verdict: encouraging evidence can support an outlook without proving that failure, damage or economically justified replacement will never occur. [1]

A projection is not twenty years of observation

The release describes approximately 5,000 vehicles and 1.5 million vehicle-days, with 1.8% average annual degradation. Those observations did not follow all modern packs for twenty years. Extending a trend into the future introduces assumptions about the later aging curve and future use. A mathematical projection should be labeled as such even when it appears plausible and comes from a company that measures actual vehicles. [1]

What research can and cannot promise

The December 2024 dynamic-cycling study shows why laboratory methods influence estimated lifetime. It does not guarantee an individual production pack. NHTSA’s guidance likewise describes factors affecting battery life. Even a strong study result does not specify what a particular warranty covers, how an accident is handled or what an owner will regard as usable remaining range. These questions require their own evidence. [2][3]

A balanced way to communicate longevity

Say that available research supports useful service lives and relatively gradual capacity loss within the studied samples. Then show the sample, observation period and limitations. Avoid both a routine-replacement deadline and an unconditional never-replace promise. For an individual vehicle, written warranty terms and measured health remain more relevant than either slogan. Applying the same standard to favorable and unfavorable claims makes the correction more trustworthy.

A long-lived sample is encouraging evidence, but no average reveals the worst outcome for every participant. Report that uncertainty in plain language alongside the benefit.

Claim traceability

What this does—and doesn’t—tell us

  • The study did not follow modern packs for 20 years.
  • The larger 2026 sample subsequently reported 2.3% average annual degradation.
WHAT TO TAKE AWAY

An optimistic service-life projection is not a universal guarantee. Scrutinize absolute favorable claims with the same care as unfavorable ones.
